Morristown is the quintessential county
seat with a bustling
downtown and quiet historic neighborhoods radiating out from
a 200 year old village green. Downtown Morristown has already
gone through quite a bit of renewal with new buildings in keeping
with the 19th century town character and stores surrounding the
Green. However, more new buildings and renovations of existing
commercial spaces are in the works. The town is keen on adding
more residential property to the downtown district as well as
around the train station, with its direct service to New York City.
Morristown's Historic District, although
rooted in 18th century
America, came to prominence in the 19th Century during the
Gilded Age. Morristown became home to some of the wealthiest
people in America who were able to commute to New York and
build grand estates throughout town. Today, the historic
district is a mix of well preserved Victorians and early 20th
Century manor homes.
Morristown is also home to Washington's
Headquarters,
Historic Speedwell, and McCullough Hall, as well as several
other museums and parks.
Morris Township completely surrounds
Morristown and shares
its school district. The township is fairly built up with
developments, estates, and some historic homes including
a small historic district called Pruddentown straddled along
Route 202 just west of downtown Morristown. The township
also took part in the Gilded Age and many of the grand homes
built during that time actually still exist along and near Route
124 to the east of downtown Morristown in the Normandy
Heights and Convent Station sections of the township.
