Talk about prestige: There is a long
waiting list for post office boxes with a Far Hills mailing address. This
town is the epitome of fine country living but with suburban and city
convenience.
Downtown Far Hills is a lazy collection of
designer and interior decor shops, services, and restaurants housed in a
quaint clapboard and shingled country setting. For more extensive
shopping, Bridgewater Commons mall is only a few miles south and the Mall
at Short Hills is a few miles east.
Bedminster, the town next door may actually
have more proper horse country but Far Hills hosts the Hunt--an annual set
of horse races which are sponsored and attended by many local
corporations. Its one of the most popular and visible vestiges of
horsey life in New Jersey (although many compare it to a giant tailgate
party!).
Far Hills is estate country--large manor
homes dot the hillsides and line the quiet, leafy country roads. Its
location along Route 287 is ideal for shopping and commuting to Morris
County and Manhattan. Aside from one townhouse development, the vast
majority of properties are single family homes and most are very
expensive. As mentioned above, the Far Hills address is highly
coveted and affordability is not the most important consideration when
purchasing here. Its the beauty of the landscape and the bragging rights
which attract people to Far Hills.
